PSYCHIATRIC MEDICATION:
SEPARATING FEAR FROM FACT
Empowering your mental health journey with evidence-based information

The information provided below is for educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice or a diagnosis. Treatment plans are highly active and individualized. Always consult with a provider at Serene Psychiatry or your local physician before making decisions about medication.
Myth #1: “Psychiatric medication will change my personality.
The Reality: Medication is designed to treat symptoms, not alter personality. When prescribed correctly, the goal is to remove the barriers (like crushing anxiety or brain fog) that are preventing your true personality from shining through. If you feel “numb” or “flat,” that usually means the medication or dosage needs adjustment—not that you have to live that way
Myth #2: “Taking medication is the ‘easy way out’ or a sign of weakness
The Reality: Mental health conditions often have biological roots, such as neurotransmitter imbalances. You wouldn’t tell a diabetic they are “weak” for taking insulin or someone with poor eyesight that glasses are a “crutch.” Medication provides the biological support your brain needs to function, making therapy and lifestyle changes more effective.
Myth #3: “I will get addicted or have to take them forever.
The Reality: Most first-line treatments for anxiety and depression (like SSRIs and SNRIs) are not addictive and do not cause cravings. While some medications require a taper to stop safely, many patients use medication as a temporary tool to get through a difficult season of life. We work with you to create an exit strategy if and when you are ready.
Myth #4: “Meds will turn me into a zombie.
The Reality: The “zombie effect” is typically a sign of over-medication or the wrong medication choice. At Serene Psychiatry, we subscribe to the “start low and go slow” philosophy. Our goal is clarity and stability, not sedation. You should feel alert and present in your life.
Myth #5: “Natural supplements are always safer than prescription drugs.
The Reality: “Natural” does not always mean safe or effective. Supplements are often unregulated and can interact dangerously with other substances. Prescription medications undergo rigorous FDA testing for safety and efficacy. We look at the whole picture—including diet and supplements—but prioritize treatments with proven scientific backing.
How We Approach Medication Management
At Serene Psychiatry, we reject the “15-minute med check” culture where patients feel rushed out the door with a prescription. We believe medication is a powerful tool, but it is rarely the only tool. Our goal is to find the lowest effective dose that helps you feel like yourself again—without the fog.
Here is what you can expect from us:
- A Partnership, Not a Dictatorship: You are the expert on your life, and we are the experts on the medicine. We explain the “why” behind every recommendation so you can make an informed choice. We decide the path forward together.
- “Start Low and Go Slow”: We prioritize your comfort. We typically begin with conservative dosing to minimize side effects, adjusting slowly based on how your body responds.
- Precision Medicine: We utilize genetic testing (such as GeneSight) when appropriate to understand how your unique metabolism processes medications. This helps us reduce the “trial and error” period and find the right fit faster.
- The Exit Strategy: For many patients, medication is a bridge to get through a difficult season, not a permanent destination. We regularly review your progress to discuss if and when it is time to taper off safely.
